1901 map of Great Shelford republished

Alan Godfrey Maps, who specialise in producing reprints of 19th and early 20th century large-scale Ordnance Survey maps, have just published a map covering Great and Little Shelford in 1901 (the 25” map reduced to a scale of 15” to the mile) as part of a new series covering Cambridgeshire.

It shows the whole of Little Shelford and nearly all of Great (Cambridge Road north of the former De Freville Arms is not included, nor is Hinton Way).

Little Shelford has changed remarkably little in past 125 years, but we can see from the map how Great Shelford has been affected by the coming of the railway, with the growth of industry around the station and the beginnings of suburbanisation (although Woollard’s Lane was still curiously rural).

On the reverse of the map is a commentary on the history of the two villages by Tony Kirby, plus extracts from Directories of the period.
